The first-person narrative by the main protagonist, the almost ninety-year-old Janžek, flows past us like a mighty Prekmurje river, supplemented by memories of the near and distant past, of a happy childhood and a youth filled with trials and tribulations. Through this personal story, the author brings up images of the semi-past and the disappearing rural life in his home region of Prekmurje.
in his novel A Panoramic Flight, Jože Horvat combines two neglected themes – life on a farm and old age – and suffuses them both with such narrative power and poetic metaphor that reading it immerses us in the middle of this merciless but magical disappearing world.
